Investment Committee Partner
Richard Strait is an Investment Committee Partner of Avante Capital Partners, a leading woman-owned private credit and structured equity fund and SBIC Fund of the Year in 2018. Mr. Strait has 35 years of experience investing in private debt and equity of US and European companies and in U.S. and European private equity funds.
His entire career was spent with Northwestern Mutual Capital (NMC), a division of The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. During his career, Mr. Strait and his portfolio teams completed $8 billion of private fixed income transactions, $1.6 billion of mezzanine and direct private equity investments, and $9 billion of private equity fund commitments. He also served on NMC’s internal investment committee which approves all mezzanine debt and direct private equity co-investments, totaling over $11 billion of commitments across more than 400 transactions from 2002 through 2016. Mr. Strait represented NMC on numerous private equity fund advisory boards and as a director or observer on private company boards. Following retirement from full time portfolio management and leadership in June 2017, Mr. Strait serves as a Senior Advisor for NMC’s private equity investment program.
Mr. Strait currently serves as an independent director of G&L Holdings, Inc. a privately-owned food ingredients company. He chairs G&L’s Finance & Acquisitions committee and also serves on the Audit and Strategy committees. G&L owns Grain Craft, the third largest flour miller in the U.S., and Southeastern Mills which offers branded food products sold at retail and ingredient solutions for food manufacturers, restaurants, and foodservice distributors.
Mr. Strait chairs the Investment Committee and serves on the board of the Jewish Home & Care Center Foundation (Milwaukee), which supports three agencies caring for the aged. He is also a member of the Alumni Advisory Board for the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Department of Economics and is a former board member and officer of COA Youth and Family Centers (Milwaukee).
Mr. Strait earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the University of Wisconsin—Madison and an M.B.A. in Finance and Accounting from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
